Most often I took the affirmative or the negative depending on which side my uncle decided to negotiate in favor of, but oft times I liked to take the moral side. I want to observe that my consisted participation at these negotiation tables and conferences, organized by professionals, made me very astute and above par and greatly improved my debating skills, public speaking and has planted in me the unmatched tendency of researching, qualities which I believe are pertinent   in the study and practice of law.   I learnt that rebuttal is an important concept in debate through which I embraced logic in which I had not only to say that the other side is wrong, but to actually prove it. Of course I risked the problem of faulty paperwork, general confusion and lack of sufficient time. Being a person with lower than average income, my endeavor seemed futile from the onset. However, my financial situation did not become an impediment.   I strongly believe that one’s financial status should not stand between his/her rights and justice. I decided to represent myself although lawyers view it as a risky undertaking especially on matters involving transaction. Additionally, I knew my situation best and be lieved that I was in the best position to tackle any issues that faced me. I had my individual rights and justice to pursue and I couldn’t allow my scanty financial status to thwart my cause (The Standard Legal Network, n.d). My humble request of seeking an admission in your reputable college is to enhance my potential Legal skills since I believe I am an attorney without opportunity or rather an attorney in waiting. Mosquito By John Updike The Mosquito By John Updike This poem by Updike describes an ordinarily dull and bland, if not even annoying pest and one of his dealings with such a creature. This pest is of course a mosquito, which seems to have made its way into his bedroom, looking to make a meal out of him. The main point that I think this poem is trying to convey is that sometimes ordinary or dull occurrences can be made into a game, and had fun with. No one likes mosquitoes, but when you think of one as an opponent and it is either kill, or be killed, then you can understand the mosquito's point of view. The speaker, who is Updike himself, seems to want to convey a melancholy affect with the use of his nonchalant language, as when he makes the mosquito a woman. Who knows, or even cares what a mosquito is, when it is bugging you, you just want it dead. Which is what he wants, but the tone remains laid back and lazy. It almost has a sarcastic or ironic twinge to it. It makes this huge melodrama out of something that is quite ordinary. Yet he professes the mosquito's innocence of wrongdoing. All she wanted was a necessary meal, lest she die, she had to drink of his "fragrant lake of blood." The diction of the poem is just wonderful and spectacular. When he says "fine wire of her whine she walked," we all know that he is describing how a mosquito hums along and winds through the air, with no direct course, but the picture it creates in your mind is very clear. When he uses"ominous" in the second line, it foreshadows some deep, dark thing to come. The word fragrant in the second stanza reveals that the mosquito probably cannot see him, but only smells his delicious blood, as one smells a home cooked meal from one's bedroom, down the hall. When he describes himself as a "lavish field of food," the word lavish jumps out at you. Once again saying that she in fact did not want to hurt anyone, but only to feast on this wonderful meal before her. He compares himself with her as if they were raging in some game or battle; he calls them "opponents." He uses "thread" and "fine wire" to describe her movement, almost as if she were a puppet. He gives her human characteristics by saying she has a "nose," and saying that she was"thankful." He says his death movement was "cunning and strong," as if it took some great skill to kill a mosquito. He describes himself as a "Gargantua," as if to say that his opponent never really had a chance. He describes his skin as a "feast," reinforcing the fact that she was only out to get a meal. She was "Lulled" by his blood, as if it had sung her a lull-a-by, as if his blood was a self-defense mechanism, to put to sleep those who would attack him. The only remorse he had was a "small welt," and a welt is a small enough thing in its self, I mean, its not a bruise or anything, and a small welt, well, that's hardly a welt at all. He describes himself as a "murderer" and the mosquito as "murdered," because she was, in fact, innocent of any wrongdoing. All that she was doing was getting herself a meal, and he had killed her for it. There is much great imagery in this poem. To start off with, when he describes the flight of the mosquito as walking on a fine wire, we actually see this insect walking on a fine wire, and can see that to be true in our minds from past experiences. The mosquito's camouflage is obviously darkness, and when she betrays this, she does so with the hum of her wings, or her voice as in line 3. All that he was to her was a "fragrant lake of blood." This helps to put the reader in the shoes of the mosquito. All that she saw was like, to us, this big lake of coke. What crime is it to go and take a few gulps of the coke lake then? Once again, he compares his body to a big pile of delicious food. Just imagine your favorite food. Now imagine Shasta Lake drained, and filled with this food. This is what she sees. Now imagine that

If there were only one word to describe Becketts work, it would have to be unique, for seldom does one come across theater so innovative. To acquire a taste of Becketts strange but inspirational work, one should start with the exceptionally jaw-dropping performance, Play. Here is a short synopsis of the production: Play begins, and continues throughout its entirety, with rapid chatter to the untrained ear. The abrupt beginning forces the listener to truly pay attention, for idle listening will cause one to miss the whole objective of the theatrical work. There isnt much indicated in the script about set design. Oddly enough, it is asked that main focuses of the production are the heads of the three people (one man and two women). Some may assume that a restriction of this kind would result in a deficiency of amusement, but many others believe that this new approach to theater as added a fresh exhilaration and an enjoyable mysteriousness to the art. Though it may seem impossible to some that one man could create such absurd conceptions, Beckett undoubtedly had preset images carved in his mind, and he articulated those images in his script. Yet, even with boundary, it is easy to realize that the script itself was written to allow maxi mum creativity within any sort of production. The script is ingeniously crafted for a wide range of creative input. When watching the on-screen version of Play, it is easy to see how. Beckett created Play with view of it being performed on stage, yet it was predictably proven that the play itself was not confined to the boundaries of theater. What Is the PSAT 10? The PSAT 10 is a practice SAT exam that debuted in the 2015-16 school year. Interpretation of words in context means that you'll be asked to define a word’s meaning given its context in the passage.Note that you won’t be asked obscure vocab questions. Finally, command of evidence tests your ability to identify parts or words in a passage that support or give evidence for specific claims, conclusions, and/or interpretations. Ethics of Drone Strikes Judah Wiesner Joan Fisher Above the law: Murder without consequence As stated in the 10 commandments, Thou shalt not kill. A clear statement, yet if necessary we kill without thought, but mostly for self-defense; but if, for example, you killed an innocent civilian, you would spend 15 years to life in prison. If thousands of people are getting locked up every day for murder, why shouldnt the government? Our government has been using drones to indirectly bomb foreign locals since 2001, resulting in staggering amounts of casualties over the years. The United States of America should stop drone strikes abroad because it kills a drastic number of foreign citizens and traumatizes local populations; it is secretive, lacks adequate legal oversight, and it targets men and women who may not even be enemy combatants or terrorists. Unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs), commonly referred to as drones, are remotely-controlled aircrafts which are loaded with bombs and missiles for various missions involving the CIA. Beginning with the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001, along with the succeeding War on Terror, the U.S. has been using drones to take out suspected terrorists in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen, and some other countries. A campaign of drone strikes calculated to take out certain high-value enemies, a project called Operation Haymaker, had, throughout a five-month time period that ended the February of 2013, resulted in no more than 35 jackpots, a term used to signal the neutralization of a specific targeted individual, while more than 200 people were declared EKIA enemy killed in action' (Zenko). The Pakistan government has even released estimates of deaths in specific drone strikes. From January 13, 2006, to October 24, 2009, it is stated that out of 746 deaths from drone strikes, 147 a re clearly casualties, with 94 being children (Woods). That means that the U.S. government would have to serve up to 220 years in prison for manslaughter under normal circumstances; but, I suppose when you are the law, you choose your own consequences. Per Clive Stafford Smith, attorney at law and founder of the organization Reprieve, an entire region is being terrorized by the constant threat of death from the skies. Their way of life is collapsing: kids are too terrified to go to school, adults are afraid to attend weddings, funerals, business meetings, or anything that involves gathering in groups. If you are wondering how this is legal, dont ask the government. The U.S. has been bombing innocent civilians for far too long with far too few punishments, and we can no longer justify it. The use of pilotless aircrafts for surveillance and targeted killings by the United States has quickly become a very controversial human rights issue; especially since the CIA has kept all the information as private as possible. The fact that the government is getting away with these irresponsible and reckless actions every year is astonishing. But casualties arent the only thing keeping these bombings from being successful. Another large problem is that these strikes are secretive and lack legal oversight, which leads to us not being able to hold our leaders liable. The CIA has yet to officially acknowledge its drone programs anywhere in the world, let alone describe the rules and procedures for compliance with US and international law (Amnesty International). Drones are used in places where war is not openly stated or permitted by Congress, which lets our nations leaders have virtually limitless power over undisclosed wars all around the world. Sadly, with the government controlling nearly everything, theres not a lot that has been done to stop drone strikes, or even slow them down. Although there have been some small things here and there, the largest and most common defense is petitions. Unfortunately, these petitions havent done a lot. Although it may sound farfetched, congress should think about taking away the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). The Obama administrations domestic legal justification for most drone strikes relies on the AUMF, which it interprets to authorize the use of force not only against those individuals and organizations with some real connection to the 9/11 attacks, but also against all associates of al Qaeda. (Brooks). This vastly pliable elucidation of the AUMF has lowered the point for the U.S. to start using force. Taking away the AUMF would not deny our president the capability of using force when necessary, to prevent or respond to a serious attack on our country, the presi dent would retain his existing power as commander in chief and chief executive, to protect our nation when needed; Nonetheless, taking away the 2001 AUMF would certainly minimize the frequency in which our president needs to resort to targeted killings. Saying to stop drone strikes completely would be rather farfetched, as there are benefits from them. Drone strikes help to create a much safer experience for our soldiers by taking them from the battlefield; Instead of boots on the ground combat, we can keep certain soldiers on U.S. soil, piloting drones out of allied territory. The Taliban, Al-Qaeda, and their partners often work in unforgiving, distant locations where sending out teams of special forces to locate and apprehend terrorists would be exceptionally dangerous, and drones keep us from doing so. Although this operation is a life saver, it is also a life taker. Indeed, the United States does warrant the use for drone strikes; but if you look at the facts or even talk to the locals in the countries receiving these strikes, it is apparent that the U.S. is being negligent, irresponsible and paying no attention to the thousands of casualties in the process. The United States of America should stop drone strikes abroad because it kills a drastic amount of pedestrians and traumatizes local populations; it is secretive, lacks adequate legal oversight, and it targets men and women who may not even be enemy combatants or terrorists. The Three Tier Essay

The five-paragraph essay is a form of written argument. It is a common requisite in assignments in American schools. The format requires an essay to have five paragraphs: one introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs with support and development, and one concluding paragraph. Because of this structure, it is also known as a hamburger essay, one three one or a three tier essay. The introduction serves to inform the reader of the basic premises, and then to state your thesis, or central idea. When a thesis essay is applied to this format, the first paragraph typically consists of a narrative hook, followed by a sentence that introduces the general theme, then another sentence narrowing the focus of the one previous. (If the author is using this format for a text-based thesis, then a sentence quoting the text, supporting the essay-writer's claim, would typically go here, along with the name of the text and the name of the author. Example: â€Å"In the book Night, Elie Wiesel says†¦ â€Å"). After this, the author narrows the discussion of the topic by stating or identifying a problem. Often, an organizational sentence is used here to describe the layout of the paper. Finally, the last sentence of the first paragraph of such an essay would state the thesis the author is trying to prove. The thesis is often linked to a â€Å"road map† for the essay, which is basically an embedded outline stating precisely what the three body paragraphs will address and giving the items in the order of the presentation. Not to be confused with an organizational sentence, a thesis merely states â€Å"The book Night follows Elie Wiesel's journey from innocence to experience,† while an organizational sentence directly states the structure and order of the essay.
