To additionally improve this, the organization is explicitly focusing on various markets by utilizing various VIPs for each kind of market. In spite of the fact that not straightforwardly done this addresses the generally increasingly breathtaking ladies, a tremendous up and coming business sector. Additionally, since Ann Taylor has been related with ââ¬Ëluxury products,ââ¬â¢ its notoriety has streamed down to its LOFT image and clients have begun to consider LOFT as moderately rich. Perhaps the greatest shortcoming of the organization (in camouflage) is likewise a gift for the organization, I. e. its LOFT division. The LOFT brand has been developing wildly with 506 LOFT stores when contrasted with 291 Ann Taylor stores in 2009. The purpose behind this development has been the interest for esteem arranged ââ¬Ëluxury,ââ¬â¢ items offered by LOFT. At the point when LOFT was set up in the late 90ââ¬â¢s, it was situated towards easygoing dress. Today, with the move towards progressively easygoing dress even in the workplace (easygoing Friday), LOFT accidentally transformed into Ann Taylorââ¬â¢s direct contender with a superior incentive. As far as publicizing, Ann Taylor advances it items for the most part through indexes, TV and magazine advertisements. It utilizes a blend of Institutional promoting, I. e. dvertising done to advance the companyââ¬â¢s picture and Promotional publicizing, I. e. publicizing that features a thing or a classification of things to get a quick reaction. [pic] Institutional Advertising Promotional Advertising In 2009, Ann Taylor collaborated with Proctor Gamble because of the financial downturn, and gave out free examples of cleanser and coupons to clients who purchase machine launderable garments. Moreover, as was once anticipated of Contemporary and Young Designer styles, Menswear is the following ââ¬Å"white spaceâ⬠of the business, offering high paces of development and return for early contestants. This gives Ann Taylor a high motivating force towards tolerating the danger of being an early-mover and adding a menswear line to its present contributions. I have SMASHING news!
I have SMASHING news! Allo poppets!! Sir Nigel Archibald Blogberry here! Marianne and I docked the commvee for some petrol while the kids fetch a cuppa and some take-away. Earlier this year Eliza asked us to install wireless Internet on the old boat. In fact she was rather demanding, although I must say now I quite enjoy being able to stream BBC Radio to Zanzibar while on safari. She also insisted I begin a web journal which sounded like a simply magnificent idea. So let me tell you about our most recent discovery! Whilst rummaging about in the archives of the Bodleian I had found an old map of labyrinthine catacombs along the banks of the Charles River. So we pipped across the pond to explore the secrets of the old colonies and whatnot. I must say upon our arrival the seafaring natives looked at us a tad queerly, but after I deployed some primitive sign language they seemed to understand and welcome us. Some of them even brought us some terrific whopping rashers of bacon that were simply splendid. We packed our kit and started exploring the catacombs. I had barely touched pick to whisker before I fell into a great honking cavern. After I got over a slightly embarrassing case of the screaming abdabs, Eliza handed me a lantern and I began peering about. Thats when I saw them: the most SPLENDIFEROUS cave paintings I have ever seen, complete with ancient inscriptions in a mysterious tongue carved beneath them! Once, in the distant past, in the ancient land of Beaveria, there were two warring peoples: the people of Pi, and the people of Tau. For many moons they fought bitterly amongst themselves over how the circumference of a circle might properly be measured and honored. Until one day a wise old man, Stuartus Schmillius, came down from his home on the mountain top, bearing with him two stone tablets. âPeople of Beaveria!â said Schmillius, âIt is time for us to cease this battle and live in peace!â He held his tablets aloft, shining in the sun. âFrom this day forth, we shall honor both our ways!â proclaimed the old man. âOn Pi Day, at Tau Time, our peoples will join together in a celebration of peace, and also math!â Schmillius planted the tablets into the hillside, where they stand to this very day. Then he sprightly skateboarded away into the horizon. The people of Beaveria were somewhat puzzled, but thankful for this wisdom. And thereafter they honored Pi Day â" 3/14 â" at Tau Time â" 6:28 PM â" as a moment of special significance, as do their descendants to this very day. And beside this last painting was a final, lengthier message, carved deeply into the rock, as if its creators wanted to make sure it would last long after them. Perhaps a primitive clamor for crops? An unusually dapper vision of the gods and ancients? Alas, we shall never know, as Im afraid their language is clearly long dead and totally indecipherable, even to a learned expert such as myself. Mores the pity, but ah well! The tots are back from Tesco and its time for us to be Blogberrying about again! Cheerio!

Personal Statement Law School Admission Essay
Introduction: I wish to tender my interest to secure admission in your law school. I had a primary interest in taking a degree in law, and this is a natural conviction which emanates from a very remote encounter to this discipline.à I discovered quite early in life that I am very inquisitive, argumentative and critical and my late father testified to this when he said that I took after my uncle who is a lawyer. I could then critique the behavior of those in the fraternity of the so-called learned-friends. This troubled me immensely and I concluded that I should be a man of the jury. The principal in my high discovered some unique characters in me which he had not spotted in any student and eventually, he made me the head prefect of the school, a position I earned due to my undisputed prowess in oratory. I routinely received awards for making exceptional grades in English Language, Literature and History, subjects that are core and prerequisite in the study of law. This was coupled with intense research in the same subjects as well as Government and religion not to forget Theology and Political science in which my findings sent a tantrum to my tutors during my senior high school. The quality time spent negotiating with my uncle and his friends on a myriad of subjects of law greatly improved my debating skills which I am proud of despite the truth that mine was from a laymanââ¬â¢s point of view. However this made me learn immensely. I admit my content was initially jumbled, even vague in matters of topic. The topic, I learnt changes from debate to debate.à Our topics of debate ranged from current issues of public importance to general philosophies or ideas. Most often I took the affirmative or the negative depending on which side my uncle decided to negotiate in favor of, but oft times I liked to take the moral side. I want to observe that my consisted participation at these negotiation tables and conferences, organized by professionals, made me very astute and above par and greatly improved my debating skills, public speaking and has planted in me the unmatched tendency of researching, qualities which I believe are pertinentà in the study and practice of law.à I learnt that rebuttal is an important concept in debate through which I embraced logic in which I had not only to say that the other side is wrong, but to actually prove it. I also learnt how to pick the important points by trying to confute the salient points of the other sides case and ââ¬Ëplay ballââ¬â¢ by disapproving individual speakers and what they say but at the same time avoiding a demeaning language. My highly anticipated passion of becoming a world class renowned attorney will be elevated to the highest level by my studying at your college. My main objective as an attorney is to speak loudly against injustice, help other people and to protect their rights, speak up on behalf of the oppressed and help the less privileged know their rights. I enjoy working independently. I remember acting pro se in a district court when I successfully represented myself in a case involving transfer of real property. It was a complex family issue and an overwhelming and challenging undertaking because I was required to prepare my own legal documents and comfortably represent them to the court. Considering the responsibilities associated with pro se, representation for an average person like me was no doubt cumbersome. Of course I risked the problem of faulty paperwork, general confusion and lack of sufficient time. Being a person with lower than average income, my endeavor seemed futile from the onset. However, my financial situation did not become an impediment.à I strongly believe that oneââ¬â¢s financial status should not stand between his/her rights and justice. I decided to represent myself although lawyers view it as a risky undertaking especially on matters involving transaction. Additionally, I knew my situation best and be lieved that I was in the best position to tackle any issues that faced me. I had my individual rights and justice to pursue and I couldnââ¬â¢t allow my scanty financial status to thwart my cause (The Standard Legal Network, n.d). My humble request of seeking an admission in your reputable college is to enhance my potential Legal skills since I believe I am an attorney without opportunity or rather an attorney in waiting. To me this has proven to be a call to serve in exercising justice since I have successfully volunteered several Legal Aids in different prosecutorsââ¬â¢ offices during summer whereby I have ran several Legal errands and this has gained me enough experience to start with as a law student. I do not regret a jot that I am from which cultural decent and I believe that this should not be a requisite for college admission. My moral principle and believe is that, that everybody deserves to be treated equally with respect regardless of background or race. I am a devotee of Martin Lutherââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËI have a dreamââ¬â¢ speech where he dreamt of seeing a nation roasting in the heat of injustice, and oppression, that will be changed into a haven of freedom and justice. That his descendants sha ll live in a nation where their judgment will be based on the content of their character not the color of their skin (Luther, 1963). Conclusion: Allow me to say this with all due modesty and with sufficient knowledge that I am a true epitome of the law student you are looking for. This is because of my open-mindedness, analytical and debating skills, team as well as individualistic spirit, intelligence and work experience. All this coupled with my outstanding communication skills and the various sides that I took in legal negotiations have greatly sharpened my leadership skills and skills of association, as well as helped me expand team spirit a requirement in life.à I look up to the ambition of studying law at your university because I am certain that I can make something out of the course, especially with regard to championing the cause of the less privileged. Epic heroes generally have military experience. They are always attractive in some way. Truly, it's a scary and risky matter to fight a monster like the one in the story. J.K. Rowling, as an example, could have killed Harry Potter and he'd make a great tragic hero. Many people enjoy the tales of epic heroes in the current popular fiction. With over 74,000 verses, the Mahabharata is among the longest epic poems on earth. Epic literature is virtually always poetry, even though some novels fit the description. I've got five more novels whom I need to do. Courage and bravery are two qualities that appear to go together with one another. A simile is a figurative device that offers you the capability to compare the similarities of two things. Catharsis isn't just a spectacular end, that could be replaced by different elements of your analysis. Beowulf satisfies each of these requirements. A number of these characteristics incorporate some scary-looking Greek words (thanks, Aristotle), but following is a basic breakdown of what it is that they mean. If his true identity was known he wouldn't have been in a position to clearly show his skills with his bow. Various sources identify various traits, based on their very own perspective. A Gun- Never Friend with Peace Free Essays
Is it possible to have a gun-free environment? Yes it is, if only everyone will maintain a harmonious relationship with each other, if everyone will help in obtaining peace and if everyone will not bring guns. ââ¬Å"To some people, gun means independence, protection and defense.â⬠à (Harcourt, Bernard. We will write a custom essay sample on A Gun- Never Friend with Peace or any similar topic only for you Order Now Language of the Gun: Youth, Crime, and Public Policy, University of Chicago Press 2006). How can it be that gun possession law is a need for personal safety? For me, it is unnecessary to have a gun possession law for oneââ¬â¢s safety. Gun at times is the source of injury and worst of all death. Some gun owners abuse the use of their guns. Since the early times gun abuse is already present. In the 19th century and early 20th century cheap revolvers are called ââ¬Å"Suicide Specialâ⬠. What does this really mean? Suicide special is a mass manufacture of cheap guns and many suicides were committed with this kind of guns. à The purpose of Gun Control Act of 1968 is said not to control guns but rather to control blacks and minorities. (Sherrill, Robert. The Saturday Night Special, New York, Charterhouse: 1973, p. 280-91.) The Gun Control Act didnââ¬â¢t control the use of guns but instead gun owners use their guns to terrorize and discriminate other people. Cheap handguns are widely use today because minorities and even the poor can easily afford it. Cheap handguns have a magnetic effect on students. Before, schools are safe refuge from violence. In recent years, there is a shocked because of multiple killings in schools caused by students. (Elliot et al.à Violence in American Schools: A New Perspective, Cambridge University Press 1998). Why did this happen? It is because of laws that legalize the possession of guns. A handgun means fame to students, fame that leads to an abuse on its use. Power is often associated with guns and youngsters are attracted to the feeling of having the power to control others in their own hands. Violence in schools due to guns is also present. Studentsââ¬â¢ rivalry regarding to academics, partners, and peers often causes group nuisance and killings. à Since handguns are inexpensive, there will be no control on the illegal or even legal possession of it. So what is the use of a law n gun possession if the production of it is uncontrolled? It is worthless. Weaponry is seen as a central stimulus to the commission of aggressive acts. The use of handguns causes fear and loathing effect in the environment. . (Wright et el.à Under the Gun: Weapons Crime and Violence in America, Aldine Transaction1983) Guns are also associated to burglary. Robbers use guns and sometimes use synthetic guns to threat their target. Homicide is also associated in the abuse of the use of guns. Letââ¬â¢s take for example a professional man who caught his wife with another man. The scene is the wife is having an intimate affair with another man, her husband caught her in the middle of the act and due to great anger and shame he pulls his gun shoot his wife immediately. The point here is that if the husband doesnââ¬â¢t have a gun, things might change and instead of killing his wife he might just talk to her, clarify things and get a divorce. In order to obtain a gun free world according to the gun free groups is to ban laws regarding gun possession. Letââ¬â¢s try imagining enactment of laws which forbid all non-government possesââ¬â¢ decree involves mainly those who are ready to obey them. When there is a discontented must ââ¬â and money to be made ââ¬â there is more often than not a way just about the law. In the black market where restricted goods are illegally sold at a higher price, guns are sold privately. There were as many as 2 million illegal guns on the street in 1993.The implication were that all those guns were in the hands of criminals, and the insinuation was that seizing the guns would make the city a safer place. Laws imposing now globally arenââ¬â¢t good enough. A steel hand in imposing the law might give real teeth For our, government, possession of guns wonââ¬â¢t help. As long as officials are allowed to have guns, there will always be gun manufacturers. Government officials sometimes protect gun manufacturers for their own sake. They might even corrupt and supply guns to the black market. Kleptoracies is a form of dictatorship. In our world, most of our leaders are kleptomanias. We donââ¬â¢t like Kleptoracies in our government. Gun laws are used to deceive tax payers so that they can corrupt more for their own fortune. Gun laws is good but donââ¬â¢t we think that weââ¬â¢re being too unmotivated? Gun law is not enough to secure personal safety for ourselves. Peace is in our hands. Let us change our strategies. Imagine, aim and create a gun-free world and donââ¬â¢t just wish for laws.à Vanish all the guns evens those who are owned by government and its officials. Close all the gun factories, too. Letââ¬â¢s start a new and clean beginning. Peace for all. Bibliography: Elliot et al.à Violence in American Schools: A New Perspective, Cambridge University Press 1998. Harcourt, Bernard. Mosquito By John Updike Essays - Ectoparasites, Mosquito
Mosquito By John Updike The Mosquito By John Updike This poem by Updike describes an ordinarily dull and bland, if not even annoying pest and one of his dealings with such a creature. This pest is of course a mosquito, which seems to have made its way into his bedroom, looking to make a meal out of him. The main point that I think this poem is trying to convey is that sometimes ordinary or dull occurrences can be made into a game, and had fun with. No one likes mosquitoes, but when you think of one as an opponent and it is either kill, or be killed, then you can understand the mosquito's point of view. The speaker, who is Updike himself, seems to want to convey a melancholy affect with the use of his nonchalant language, as when he makes the mosquito a woman. Who knows, or even cares what a mosquito is, when it is bugging you, you just want it dead. Which is what he wants, but the tone remains laid back and lazy. It almost has a sarcastic or ironic twinge to it. It makes this huge melodrama out of something that is quite ordinary. Yet he professes the mosquito's innocence of wrongdoing. All she wanted was a necessary meal, lest she die, she had to drink of his "fragrant lake of blood." The diction of the poem is just wonderful and spectacular. When he says "fine wire of her whine she walked," we all know that he is describing how a mosquito hums along and winds through the air, with no direct course, but the picture it creates in your mind is very clear. When he uses"ominous" in the second line, it foreshadows some deep, dark thing to come. The word fragrant in the second stanza reveals that the mosquito probably cannot see him, but only smells his delicious blood, as one smells a home cooked meal from one's bedroom, down the hall. When he describes himself as a "lavish field of food," the word lavish jumps out at you. Once again saying that she in fact did not want to hurt anyone, but only to feast on this wonderful meal before her. He compares himself with her as if they were raging in some game or battle; he calls them "opponents." He uses "thread" and "fine wire" to describe her movement, almost as if she were a puppet. He gives her human characteristics by saying she has a "nose," and saying that she was"thankful." He says his death movement was "cunning and strong," as if it took some great skill to kill a mosquito. He describes himself as a "Gargantua," as if to say that his opponent never really had a chance. He describes his skin as a "feast," reinforcing the fact that she was only out to get a meal. She was "Lulled" by his blood, as if it had sung her a lull-a-by, as if his blood was a self-defense mechanism, to put to sleep those who would attack him. The only remorse he had was a "small welt," and a welt is a small enough thing in its self, I mean, its not a bruise or anything, and a small welt, well, that's hardly a welt at all. He describes himself as a "murderer" and the mosquito as "murdered," because she was, in fact, innocent of any wrongdoing. All that she was doing was getting herself a meal, and he had killed her for it. There is much great imagery in this poem. To start off with, when he describes the flight of the mosquito as walking on a fine wire, we actually see this insect walking on a fine wire, and can see that to be true in our minds from past experiences. The mosquito's camouflage is obviously darkness, and when she betrays this, she does so with the hum of her wings, or her voice as in line 3. All that he was to her was a "fragrant lake of blood." This helps to put the reader in the shoes of the mosquito. All that she saw was like, to us, this big lake of coke. What crime is it to go and take a few gulps of the coke lake then? Once again, he compares his body to a big pile of delicious food. Just imagine your favorite food. Now imagine Shasta Lake drained, and filled with this food. This is what she sees. Now imagine that

Play essays
Play essays How can one describe any of Becketts work? It is truly difficult to even begin to convey what his productions might stand for. If there were only one word to describe Becketts work, it would have to be unique, for seldom does one come across theater so innovative. To acquire a taste of Becketts strange but inspirational work, one should start with the exceptionally jaw-dropping performance, Play. Here is a short synopsis of the production: Play begins, and continues throughout its entirety, with rapid chatter to the untrained ear. The abrupt beginning forces the listener to truly pay attention, for idle listening will cause one to miss the whole objective of the theatrical work. There isnt much indicated in the script about set design. Oddly enough, it is asked that main focuses of the production are the heads of the three people (one man and two women). Some may assume that a restriction of this kind would result in a deficiency of amusement, but many others believe that this new approach to theater as added a fresh exhilaration and an enjoyable mysteriousness to the art. Though it may seem impossible to some that one man could create such absurd conceptions, Beckett undoubtedly had preset images carved in his mind, and he articulated those images in his script. Yet, even with boundary, it is easy to realize that the script itself was written to allow maxi mum creativity within any sort of production. The script is ingeniously crafted for a wide range of creative input. When watching the on-screen version of Play, it is easy to see how. Beckett created Play with view of it being performed on stage, yet it was predictably proven that the play itself was not confined to the boundaries of theater. Its transformation from stage to film surely was not an easy task, but it was, without a doubt, an educational one. Though there was room to allow for the directors creat ...

What Is the PSAT 10 Complete Guide
What Is the PSAT 10 Complete Guide SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips Most high school students have heard of the PSAT NMSQT- aka the practice SAT that doubles as a qualifying exam for the National Merit competition. Fewer have heard of the PSAT 10, which is a version of the PSAT designed specifically for sophomores. What exactly is the PSAT 10, and why should you consider taking it? Learn all about it here. What Is the PSAT 10? The PSAT 10 is a practice SAT exam that debuted in the 2015-16 school year. It is aligned to the SAT,meaning it has similar question types and the same Reading, Writing, and Math sections. Its scores are based ona total scale of 320-1520. Unlike the SAT, which is designed for juniors and seniors, the PSAT 10 is designed specifically for sophomores in high school. As a result, its questions are not as difficult as those on the SAT. It's essential to know that the PSAT 10 is the same test as the PSAT/NMSQT, which is designed for both sophomores and juniors. In other words, all questions, sections, and time limits are the same for these two tests. So why do these exams have different names then? Here are the two major differences between the PSAT 10 and PSAT/NMSQT: The PSAT 10 is offered at a different time than the PSAT/NMSQT is: While the PSAT 10 is offeredonce a year to sophomores in the spring, the PSAT/NMSQT is offered once a year in the fall.School districts can choose when to administer the PSAT 10. This year, it must be between February 25 and March 29, 2019, or April 1 and April 26, 2019. The PSAT 10 doesnotqualify you for National Merit as the PSAT/NMSQT does: Even if you get a really highscore on it, don't expect to win any scholarships or awards. It's just an SAT practice test- that's it! What Is the PSAT/NMSQT? As stated above, the PSAT NMSQT is, content-wise, the same test as the PSAT 10. Like the PSAT 10, the PSAT/NMSQT is a practice SAT exam and is thus highly similar to the SAT.However, since the PSAT NMSQT is designed specifically for sophomores and juniors in high school, it's not nearly as difficult as the SAT is. Weââ¬â¢ll explore the different difficulty levels in detail below. The PSAT NMSQT can qualify you for the National Merit competition but only ifyou take it as a junior and get a high enough scoreon it. While sophomores may take this test, too, they're not eligible for National Merit, no matter how high their scores might be. Finally, the PSAT NMSQT is offered only in the fall, typically in October. This year, the test will be held on Wednesday, October 10, 2018; there will also be a Saturday option on October 13, and an alternate date on Wednesday, October 24. Want to get a head start on the PSAT NMQST? We have the industry's leading PSAT prep program. Built by Harvard grads and SAT full scorers, the program learns your strengths and weaknesses through advanced statistics, then customizes your prep program to you so that you get the most effective prep possible. Check out our 5-day free trial today: Timing and Scoring of the PSAT 10 The PSAT 10 is two hours and 45 minutes long, the same length as the PSAT NMSQT. Here are the details of each test section: PSAT Section Total Time # of Questions Reading 60 minutes 47 Writing and Language 35 minutes 44 Math 70 minutes 48 Even though there are more Reading and Writing questions than there are Math questions, Math is worth half your total score, between 160 and 760 points. Reading and Writing are combined to give you a single Evidence-Based Reading and Writing (EBRW) section score, also between 160 and 760 points. Therefore, the PSAT 10 is scored between 320 and 1520 (160ââ¬â760 each for Math and EBRW). Score scale for the SAT, PSAT NMSQT, PSAT 10, and PSAT 8/9, via the College Board. This puts the PSAT 10 and the PSAT/NMSQT on a similar scale as the SAT, which is scored between 400 and 1600 (200 and 800 for Math and EBRW, respectively). The idea behind these similar scoring systems is that the PSAT can be used to predict your score on the SAT; however, it can't predict an exact score since the SAT is a more difficult test. This is why the scoring scales donââ¬â¢t match up exactly. What Does the PSAT 10 Test? The content and format of the PSAT 10 is identical to that of the PSAT/NMSQT and very similar to that of the SAT. The only major difference is that the PSAT 10 is shorter than the SAT is, and its questions do not get as difficult since they're designed for students at the sophomore level. Fortunately, the College Board offers specific guidelines as to how the PSAT differs from the SAT, primarily in terms of difficulty and content. We will summarize this information by section to give you an idea of what to expect on the PSAT 10. PSAT 10 Reading Section All questions in the PSAT 10 Reading section are multiple choice and based on passages. You'll have 60 minutes to answer 47 questions. Read below for more on what the passages are like and how difficult the questions are. What Are the Passages Like? The Reading section passages are drawn from American and world literature, history/social studies articles, and science articles. You'll get four passages and a set of paired passages for which you'll be asked to compare them. Some passages include informational graphics, such as charts, graphs, and tables, and itââ¬â¢s your job to be able to break those down and interpret them accurately. In other words, the Reading section goes beyond your basic "read the passage, answer the questions" standardized test. According to the College Board's comparison of the PSAT and SAT Reading tests, both sections cover text levelsfrom 9th grade to 10th grade,as well as some postsecondary, or college-level, texts. In addition, the difficulty of the graphical representations are deemed "somewhat challenging to challenging" for both the PSAT and SAT. So what does all of this mean? While the difficulty of Reading passages are generally the same for both tests, the total number of words in these passages differs. The SAT contains 3,250 words total in its passages, whereas the PSAT contains just 3,000 words total. What Are the Questions Like? Both the SAT and PSAT emphasize the following skills, or subscores, in their Reading sections: Analysis in history/social studies passages Analysis in science passages Interpretation of words in context Command of evidence Analysis of history/social studies and analysis of science mean that you'll have to analyze patterns in the writing and choose answers explaining how and why certain phenomena are true. Interpretation of words in context means that you'll be asked to define a wordââ¬â¢s meaning given its context in the passage.Note that you wonââ¬â¢t be asked obscure vocab questions. Finally, command of evidence tests your ability to identify parts or words in a passage that support or give evidence for specific claims, conclusions, and/or interpretations. Take a look at theofficial PSAT example question below to get an idea of what a PSAT 10 Reading question looks like. Notice how the emphasis is on what the sentence means in the context of the passage (not shown): PSAT 10 Writing Section For the PSAT 10 Writing section, you will also be working with passages. But for these questions, you'll be put in the role of an editor who is improving a passage. Like the PSAT 10 Reading section, all questions are multiple choice. You'll have 35 minutes to answer 44 questions. What Are the Passages Like? Passages on the PSAT 10 Writing section are either arguments, informative/explanatory texts or nonfiction narratives. They address topics related to careers, history/social studies, science, and the humanities. Some passages come with informational graphics, such as charts, graphs, and tables. Passages are long and require you to answer questions about the whole passageââ¬â¢s organization and meaning. However, there is also more fine-grained editing. For example, you might have to determine the correct placement of a comma in part of a sentence. The texts vary in complexity, from those found in high school classes to college-level. Again, the PSAT 10 covers a very similar variety of texts as those on the SAT Writing section. What Are the Questions Like? Just like on the Reading section, the Writing questions will emphasize the following four subscores: Analysis in history/social studies passages Analysis in science passages Interpretation of words in context Command of evidence Moreover, two other subscores calledexpression of ideas (i.e., topic development, organization, and rhetorical effectiveness) and standard English conventions will be tested. What these mean is that in addition to analyzing passagesââ¬â¢ meanings, you'll also have to correct their content on a technical level. Check out the two official sample PSAT Writing questions below: PSAT 10 Math Section For the PSAT Math section, you'll get 70 minutes to answer 48 questions. Most questions will be multiple choice, but there are some student-produced (grid-in) responses;these account for about 17% of Math questions. Like the SAT Math section, the PSAT Math section is divided into two parts: a No Calculator Math Test, for which use of a calculator is not permitted, and a Calculator Math Test, for which use of a calculator is permitted. Note that you will get grid-ins on each subsection. Here is a brief overview of each Math subsection: PSAT 10 Math Subsection Total Time # of Questions No Calculator 25 minutes 17 Calculator 45 minutes 31 The emphasis in the Math section is on problem solving, modeling, using appropriate tools strategically, and recognizing and using algebraic structures. In practice, this means more story/situation problems than the old SAT/PSAT had. Pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, basic statistics, and trigonometry are all tested on the SAT. As the College Board notes, the PSAT 10 generally contains fewer advanced algebra, geometry, and trig questions. That said, you can still expect a pretty thorough test of pre-algebra, basic algebra, and basic statistics. Below are two official PSAT Math questions. The first is from the No Calculator subsection, and the second is from the Calculator subsection: Should You Take the PSAT 10 or the PSAT NMSQT? Now that you understand what the similarities and differences are between the PSAT 10 and PSAT NMSQT, which test should you take? Below, we give you a few key tips to help you decide whether to take the PSAT 10 or the PSAT NMSQT: As a junior, you should definitely take the PSAT/NMSQT.Doing this will give you a shot to qualify for the National Merit competition should you score high enough for it; you'll also get the most rigorous practice for the SAT. As a sophomore, you can take either test, depending on your goals. However, if you have your heart set on getting a National Merit Scholarship, then it's best to take the PSAT/NMSQT as a sophomore (possibly in addition to the PSAT 10 if you want even more practice). Though you canââ¬â¢t qualify for National Merit as a 10th grader, youcan get in some helpful practice and learn exactly how difficult the exam is. Youââ¬â¢ll also start more rigorous SAT practice early. If youââ¬â¢re a freshman or younger, consider taking the PSAT 8/9- yet another version of the PSAT specifically designed for older middle school students in (you guessed it!) the eighth and ninth grades. The PSAT 8/9 will introduce you to SAT-type questions without overwhelming you with difficult content. Whatââ¬â¢s Next? Change Management and Management Styles Assignment
Change Management and Management Styles - Assignment Example In terms of ethics in research and ensuring that information is accurately conveyed within the publication process, this is an essential aspect of ensuring that all individuals involved feel as if the process has spoken directly to the needs of each and every stakeholder; not necessarily a given group to any larger extent as compared to another. Researchers, scholars, and authors have long understood that the guidelines and procedures with respect to the way in which information is represented allow stakeholders to approach such information from a variety of different standpoints. In such a way, the mechanisms through which understanding can be provided are multiplied; allowing a situation in which an approach to the research or an understanding of available information can be determined from an alternative point of view - perhaps even one that the authors or researcher did not initially intent. Not only does this help with the creation of further bodies of knowledge, it also ensures that ethical standards are met and that stakeholders from varying positions are able to utilize the available information and draw inference upon it. Likewise, in terms of assisting overall credibility, it is without question that the process of ethical consideration and the impact of the way in which information is viewed, and by whom, greatly maximizes the overall level of credibility that any particular publication or scholarship might otherwise achieved. For instance, with respect to the process of writing a university paper, something that is nothing more than practice for the way in which information is revealed and produced in the professional world, the student must be continually aware of the way in which information is represented and the potential for discriminatory bias or other harmful miscomprehensions being present within the publication. ARTICLE REFLECTION Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
ARTICLE REFLECTION - Essay Example One of the biggest hindering factors to poor decision-making Mauboussin points out is overconfidence. People make poor decisions because they tend to think they are above-average; are optimistic; and have the illusion of having control over the situation. The experience and training people gain over the years influence their perceptions which inevitably lead to poor judgments and predictions. Another, major factor which influences decision-makers is the perception of the outside world. When decision-makers are confused by their internal information, they turn towards the outside world to gauge how others have dealt with similar problems. People try to find trends and events to base their own decisions on. Sometimes this is effective but at other times miscalculation can occur due to wrong interpretation of data, information bias and sometimes simply because trends do not account for ad hoc situations. Nevertheless, this outside view, according to Mauboussin is a more realistic approach because it gives a "reality check" to decision-makers. It offers decision-makers the opportunity to evaluate and contemplate which is an important in decision-making. However, I am of the view that decision-making is a combination of both internal and external knowledge. One cannot negate the fact that internal knowledge, ones professional experience and learned processes are also critical for decision-making. Mauboussin seems to have leaned on external factors more as opposed to internal factors for effective decision, a bias in my view. If all decision-makers start to rely exclusively on external information and trends, then it would be difficult to make instantaneous decisions in the field such as in the case of doctors, paramedics, firefighters and other life-saving professionals. Furthermore, I feel that Mauboussin has overly relied on his financial background in writing

Ethics of Drone Strikes
Ethics of Drone Strikes Judah Wiesner Joan Fisher Above the law: Murder without consequence As stated in the 10 commandments, Thou shalt not kill. A clear statement, yet if necessary we kill without thought, but mostly for self-defense; but if, for example, you killed an innocent civilian, you would spend 15 years to life in prison. If thousands of people are getting locked up every day for murder, why shouldnt the government? Our government has been using drones to indirectly bomb foreign locals since 2001, resulting in staggering amounts of casualties over the years. The United States of America should stop drone strikes abroad because it kills a drastic number of foreign citizens and traumatizes local populations; it is secretive, lacks adequate legal oversight, and it targets men and women who may not even be enemy combatants or terrorists. Unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs), commonly referred to as drones, are remotely-controlled aircrafts which are loaded with bombs and missiles for various missions involving the CIA. Beginning with the World Trade Center attacks of September 11, 2001, along with the succeeding War on Terror, the U.S. has been using drones to take out suspected terrorists in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen, and some other countries. A campaign of drone strikes calculated to take out certain high-value enemies, a project called Operation Haymaker, had, throughout a five-month time period that ended the February of 2013, resulted in no more than 35 jackpots, a term used to signal the neutralization of a specific targeted individual, while more than 200 people were declared EKIA enemy killed in action' (Zenko). The Pakistan government has even released estimates of deaths in specific drone strikes. From January 13, 2006, to October 24, 2009, it is stated that out of 746 deaths from drone strikes, 147 a re clearly casualties, with 94 being children (Woods). That means that the U.S. government would have to serve up to 220 years in prison for manslaughter under normal circumstances; but, I suppose when you are the law, you choose your own consequences. Per Clive Stafford Smith, attorney at law and founder of the organization Reprieve, an entire region is being terrorized by the constant threat of death from the skies. Their way of life is collapsing: kids are too terrified to go to school, adults are afraid to attend weddings, funerals, business meetings, or anything that involves gathering in groups. If you are wondering how this is legal, dont ask the government. The U.S. has been bombing innocent civilians for far too long with far too few punishments, and we can no longer justify it. The use of pilotless aircrafts for surveillance and targeted killings by the United States has quickly become a very controversial human rights issue; especially since the CIA has kept all the information as private as possible. The fact that the government is getting away with these irresponsible and reckless actions every year is astonishing. But casualties arent the only thing keeping these bombings from being successful. Another large problem is that these strikes are secretive and lack legal oversight, which leads to us not being able to hold our leaders liable. The CIA has yet to officially acknowledge its drone programs anywhere in the world, let alone describe the rules and procedures for compliance with US and international law (Amnesty International). Drones are used in places where war is not openly stated or permitted by Congress, which lets our nations leaders have virtually limitless power over undisclosed wars all around the world. Sadly, with the government controlling nearly everything, theres not a lot that has been done to stop drone strikes, or even slow them down. Although there have been some small things here and there, the largest and most common defense is petitions. Unfortunately, these petitions havent done a lot. Although it may sound farfetched, congress should think about taking away the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF). The Obama administrations domestic legal justification for most drone strikes relies on the AUMF, which it interprets to authorize the use of force not only against those individuals and organizations with some real connection to the 9/11 attacks, but also against all associates of al Qaeda. (Brooks). This vastly pliable elucidation of the AUMF has lowered the point for the U.S. to start using force. Taking away the AUMF would not deny our president the capability of using force when necessary, to prevent or respond to a serious attack on our country, the presi dent would retain his existing power as commander in chief and chief executive, to protect our nation when needed; Nonetheless, taking away the 2001 AUMF would certainly minimize the frequency in which our president needs to resort to targeted killings. Saying to stop drone strikes completely would be rather farfetched, as there are benefits from them. Drone strikes help to create a much safer experience for our soldiers by taking them from the battlefield; Instead of boots on the ground combat, we can keep certain soldiers on U.S. soil, piloting drones out of allied territory. The Taliban, Al-Qaeda, and their partners often work in unforgiving, distant locations where sending out teams of special forces to locate and apprehend terrorists would be exceptionally dangerous, and drones keep us from doing so. Although this operation is a life saver, it is also a life taker. Indeed, the United States does warrant the use for drone strikes; but if you look at the facts or even talk to the locals in the countries receiving these strikes, it is apparent that the U.S. is being negligent, irresponsible and paying no attention to the thousands of casualties in the process. The United States of America should stop drone strikes abroad because it kills a drastic amount of pedestrians and traumatizes local populations; it is secretive, lacks adequate legal oversight, and it targets men and women who may not even be enemy combatants or terrorists. The Three Tier Essay
The five-paragraph essay is a form of written argument. It is a common requisite in assignments in American schools. The format requires an essay to have five paragraphs: one introductory paragraph, three body paragraphs with support and development, and one concluding paragraph. Because of this structure, it is also known as a hamburger essay, one three one or a three tier essay. The introduction serves to inform the reader of the basic premises, and then to state your thesis, or central idea. When a thesis essay is applied to this format, the first paragraph typically consists of a narrative hook, followed by a sentence that introduces the general theme, then another sentence narrowing the focus of the one previous. (If the author is using this format for a text-based thesis, then a sentence quoting the text, supporting the essay-writer's claim, would typically go here, along with the name of the text and the name of the author. Example: ââ¬Å"In the book Night, Elie Wiesel saysâ⬠¦ ââ¬Å"). After this, the author narrows the discussion of the topic by stating or identifying a problem. Often, an organizational sentence is used here to describe the layout of the paper. Finally, the last sentence of the first paragraph of such an essay would state the thesis the author is trying to prove. The thesis is often linked to a ââ¬Å"road mapâ⬠for the essay, which is basically an embedded outline stating precisely what the three body paragraphs will address and giving the items in the order of the presentation. Not to be confused with an organizational sentence, a thesis merely states ââ¬Å"The book Night follows Elie Wiesel's journey from innocence to experience,â⬠while an organizational sentence directly states the structure and order of the essay.

What additional information or tests would you request? Considering a diagnosis of dehydration, along with the fact that Joe seems to be consuming a lot of caffeine, a diuretic that causes fluid loss, the student may suggest testing Na, Ca, and other electrolyte levels in the blood, as well as levels of caffeine or other metabolites in the blood and urine. This latter information may help the student determine or at least estimate Joeââ¬â¢s caffeine intake. The student can begin to research and accumulate knowledge about dehydration as well as the effects of caffeine in the body. New knowledge about caffeineââ¬â¢s role in possibly interfering with iron absorption and decreasing insulin levels may lead the student to consider additional tests for iron and blood insulin levels. The student may also come to the conclusion that such tests may not be needed, necessary or specific to caffeine intake. Innocence Is The Quality Of Being Free From Guilt, Sin Or...
Innocence is the quality of being free from guilt, sin or moral wrong. A synonym for the word child is innocent . This broad concept of childhood innocence is thoroughly explored through its significance throughout The Catcher In The Rye by J.D. Salinger. It exposes the theme of the coming of age, as well as the circumstances that accompany it, all revolving around the loss of innocence. The protagonist, Holden Claufield, is an open-minded yet phony individual whom experiences this loss himself in various aspects of his adolescence. As a protector of innocence, Holden is devoted to preventing his own maturity, maintaining childhood naivete and he struggles to accept that change is inevitable. Through feigning adulthood, Holden yearns to prolong his own innocence. Preserving mental bonds to childhood is a predominant compulsion to him. In the moment that Holden is walking down Fifth Avenue and pondering upon disappearing from New York, he states, ââ¬Å"Every time I d get to the en d of a block I d make believe I was talking to my brother Allie. I d say to him, Allie, don t let me disappear. Please, Allie. â⬠(198). Holden hits the nadir of his life in wanting to run away from everything and therefore undergoes a psychotic breakdown as perceived in his speculation. It seems as though Holden s younger brother Allie is his only solace, as he is one of the few people that he refers to with sincere affection throughout the novel. Communication Breakdown Free Essays
Communication Breakdown Deborah Tannen in her essay ââ¬Å"Sex Lies and Conversationâ⬠points out the problems in communication between genders. She focuses on conversational styles and on how a personââ¬â¢s expectations of oneââ¬â¢s reaction may cause misunderstanding. She emphasizes the importance of something she calls cross cultural communication. We will write a custom essay sample on Communication Breakdown or any similar topic only for you Order Now Tannen believes that in order to communicate properly with the opposite sex we must learn their culture and adapt to conversation with them. First, Tannen describes the differences in how children socialize. Most of what we know about communication we learned when we were children. When women are little girls, they have best friends, ones we can share our secrets with. When we get a little older and have a relationship with the opposite sex we expect the same kind of communication. Tannen believes the importance is not necessarily the topic but the feeling that you get from conversation and points out ,ââ¬Å"What is important is not the individual subjects that are disclosed but the sense of closeness, of a life shared, that emerges when people tell their thoughts, feelings and impressionsâ⬠(51). We must learn to socialize with the opposite sex the same way we do with the same sex. If we could learn to connect and have the ââ¬Å"sense of closenessâ⬠with the opposite sex we might be able to communicate successfully. Tannenââ¬â¢s research has shown that men socialize differently as boys and ââ¬Å"Since they donââ¬â¢t assume talk is the cement that binds the relationship, men donââ¬â¢t know what kind of talk women want, and they donââ¬â¢t miss it when it isnââ¬â¢t thereâ⬠(51). Tannen points out that boys learn to communicate in larger groups, often struggling not to be in the subaltern position of the conversation. Men do not like to listen; they like to feel like they are the superior person in the conversation. (51) Communication starts in childhood and what we have learned to expect from conversations. Next, Tannen observes how men and women listen to each other and how this can cause misunderstanding between genders . She feels that there is confusion about what women expect and declares, ââ¬Å"When women talk to each other in a close, comfortable setting, they often overlap, finish each otherââ¬â¢s sentences and anticipate what the other is about to sayâ⬠(53). Tannen also talks about listener noise. Women often will say ââ¬Å"mhmâ⬠or ââ¬Å"uhuhâ⬠and men do not do these things when they talk to each other. Women are looking for that ââ¬Å"listener noiseâ⬠and if he is silent, she thinks he is ignoring her but on the same token Tannen notes, ââ¬Å"Men who expect silent attention interpret a stream of listener noise as overreaction or impatienceâ⬠(53). Body language and conversational habits are causing women to feel like they are being ignored and men to feel as if they are being interrupted. When a woman is having a conversation they expect the listener to ââ¬Å"express agreementâ⬠and be supportive of the conversation. Men, on the other hand, feel it is their conversational duty to express other positions in the argument. (53) Learning the importance of building a rapport with the person you are talking to may be another way to have successful conversation with the opposite sex. Finally, Tannen believes that learning how the opposite sex communicates is the key. If we can learn what to expect when communicating with someone then we can learn how to respond. Tannen suggests ââ¬Å" A sociolinguistic approach by which male-female conversation is seen as cross- cultural communication allows us to understand the problem and forge solutions without blaming either partyâ⬠(54). Tannen stresses the importance of telling the other person how you feel about their communication with you and advises,â⬠Women who feel abandoned and deprived when their husbands wonââ¬â¢t listen to or report daily news may be happy to discover their husbands trying to adapt once they understand the place of small talk in womenââ¬â¢s relationshipsâ⬠(55). It is really not the male or females fault that we communicate the way we do but it is our fault if we do not speak up and tell them it bothers us. When we are in a relationship with another person we just have to adapt to the way they communicate to make the relationship work. If a woman learns to accept that her husband is not going to communicate with her like her best girlfriend did in her childhood then she can look for other people to hold those types of conversation with. (55) Learning to communicate with the opposite sex involves many different things. Communication is something that is learned in childhood but mostly with the same sex. In order to have a successful relationship with good communication we must understand that men and women have very different body language when communicating and that they do not respond the same. Accepting that there is a difference in the communication of genders and learning to adapt is paramount in relationships. Tannen, Deborah. ââ¬Å"Sex, Lies and Conversation. â⬠The Norton Mix. Jay Ryan Essays - Oily Fish, Fisheries, Ichthyology, Sport Fish
Jay Ryan 3/25/99 American Enterprise: It's Worth Fishing For It was about 10:00 at night when my father enters my room and awakens me to get ready for our over night fishing trip. A long drive was ahead of us so I took the liberty to get some sleep. We finally made it to the boat dock around 11:00 and ended up leaving the harbor around midnight. Once more I had a long trip ahead of me so again I fell asleep. At around 4:00 in the morning I was awakened to the loud clanging of a bell. I had remembered that the captain of the boat had mentioned that if a bell were to sound that all passengers were to report to the deck immediately. The bell was more or likely a sign of boils. Boils were the bubbles in the water created when tuna was swimming around a school of bait. So of course I jumped up and ran with anticipation that we would be fishing so soon. Yet when I finally reached the deck I had found that the captain was merely having a test on how prompt the passengers were. Extremely disappointed and annoyed that first off the captain had that ner ve to wake me and then there weren't any fish, I retreated to my bunk. Once again I was awakened to the sound of a clanging bell. Unsure what the captain had to offer up on the deck I contemplated whether or not I should return to the deck. Remembering that I was adventurer, I took the risk and quickly jumped up, ran up the stairs, and once more was on the deck. This time I was greeted by a very bright sun and quickly ran to get my pole. Upon retrieving my pole I heard some one yell, "Boils off the bow" with out thinking twice I grabbed the anchovy, baited my hook, and dropped the bait over the side of the boat with high hopes that a tuna fish would find it most desirable. Yet time and time again I was unsuccessful. Seeing that everyone else on the boat wasn't having quite as hard of a time as me I was quickly becoming discouraged. Down to one my last anchovies I decided what the heck I might as well give it one more try. Once more I tossed the anchovy over the side of the boat and watched as it suddenly swam out of sight and then instantly my line began to run in a frenzy. Up and down, left and right, and any which way that fish felt he could get away. Feeling the tension on the string I slowly reeled him in. The closer and closer he got the more of a fight he put up. Adrenaline now took over my system. Seeing the fish I became overwhelmed with excitement, don't forget it had taken me about an hour to finally get a bite. With the fish in my grasp the line suddenly snapped. It was so close; it had to have been at least a 10-pound catch. With the excitement of the previous battle going through my mind I wasn't giving up now. My last anchovy, it's my pride, against the survival of a tuna. I ended that day with a 15-pound catch. It had been the largest fish caught on that boat. While sitting in my economics class, we were asked to evaluate the American Enterprise System and compare it to a modern day scenario. Of course my fishing trip stood out like a sore thumb. I then took each part of the trip and analyzed it. First off the false alarm by the captain represents Communism. Communism gets you all excited and wanting to get started yet when you finally arrive you find nothing. A matter of fact you find your self stranded in the middle of darkness wondering why you even got up. The only thing for a citizen under communist power can do is act much like I did and retreat. Now the American Enterprise System is what I awoke to the next morning. You find that skepticism is present and you don't know whether to lay there in bed or get
